Disc Golf Flight Ratings Explained

Most disc golf discs feature a four-number flight rating system that tells you how the disc is expected to fly. Here's what each number means:

1. Speed (1-14)

Speed measures how fast the disc must be thrown to perform properly. Higher speed discs are faster but harder to control. Lower speeds are better for beginners.

Speed

Disc Type

Example

1-3

Putter

Judge, P2

4-6

Midrange

EMac Truth

7-9

Fairway Driver

River, FD

10-14

Distance Driver

Trespass, DD3

2. Glide (1-7)

Glide describes how long a disc stays in the air. Higher glide means more airtime and potential distance.

Glide

Performance

1-3

Low glide (fast drop) - more control

4-5

Balanced glide

6-7

Max glide - great for extra distance

3. Turn (+1 to -5)

Turn indicates the disc’s tendency to turn right (for a right-hand backhand throw). More negative = more understable.

Turn

Flight Behavior

+1

Very overstable (resists turning)

0

Stable (neutral flight)

-1 to -3

Understable (turns right)

-4 to -5

Very understable (rollers, big S-curves)

4. Fade (0-5)

Fade measures how much the disc finishes left (for RHBH throws) at the end of flight. Higher fade = stronger hook.

Fade

Finish Behavior

0-1

Very straight finish

2-3

Reliable fade

4-5

Strong, hard hook

Example

Disc: Lucid EMac Truth — 5 / 5 / 0 / 2
- Speed 5: Midrange speed
- Glide 5: Good airtime
- Turn 0: Neutral flight
- Fade 2: Reliable, soft finish left
